The oceans cover 70% of Earth’s surface.  Fish were the first vertebrates, and they have dominated the oceans since they first evolved.  There are more species of fish than there are of any other vertebrate type.  Many fish even have a sense we land animals do not possess – an electrical sense telling them if animate life is nearby.  Though of lower intelligence, they have a dimension of consciousness that we lack.  They are a prime source of food for all people living near water.  The Fish is a representative of ocean life.
